Prologue :

Avalon : - Lost forever in the mists of the Summer Sea? The abode of heroes, more correctly written as Ynys yr Afallon from the Welsh language meaning 'Isle of Apples'. The island lies in the centre of a great lake whose still waters gleam like blue steel, and- are surrounded by dark forests. The ancient hero slain in battle must find his painful way through these forests until he reaches the shores of the lake, where a barge draped in black and silver cloth is moored, secured with a curiously woven rope of plaited reed, A mysterious woman sits at its helm while dark little men, half naked, their skin tattooed with blue woad silently man the oars. The barge glides across to the island without causing a ripple on the still waters, and as it approaches Avalon, the hero's gaping wounds become whole again. With all his vigour restored to him he steps onto the beautiful island, where the sun always shines and rough weather is unknown. Orchards of apple trees laden with glowing fruit rise up from the water's edge and beyond them the great oaks, golden shoots of mistletoe clinging to their branches. When the dead hero makes his way to this forest he slowly becomes aware of the other inhabitants of the island. Some are heroes like himself, who have perished in the defence of the right against the powers of darkness, others upon the isle are the daughters of Avalon, the fae. Beyond the forest lies the Tor with its winding path spiraling around the immense hill. Atop the Tor there stands a circle of standing stones...

Client : Personal Folio Piece.
Medium : Photographic Manipulation: (Digital composition) 28cm by 23.05cm
Created using Adobe Photoshop 2004 a.d
This faerie is somewhat of a digital Frankenstein, being constructed out of spare parts from various photoshoots. The butterfly wings were built from a single wing, layered, warped and flipped for effect. The structure in the background is Bothwell castle (viewed from the southwest) the 13th century donjon tower is considered its most prominent feature.
Historical notes : Bothwell Castle was besieged many times during Scoland's warswith England in the early 14th century, ownership passed to the Black Douglases who had to rebuild much of it. Following their overthrow in 1455 by James II, the castle reverted to the Crown. Note to the authurians: I know I could have used St Michael of Torres church in Somerset but I'm saving that for a more advanced project ( considering the orig. got kinda broken in 1275
I figure I'll have free reign to come up with something pretty cool ).
